HEALTH CERTIFICATES AND VACCINATIONS

Vaccinations and health certificates required of exchange students and teachers from the Nordic countries, Europe and Canada (working in clinical practice/nursing) prior to arriving at Turku Polytechnic. The documents are required  in Swedish or in English, and should be submitted before arriving at Turku Polytechnic.
1 - Health certificate
(A statement also ensuring that the person is not a carrier of any generally contagious disease)
2- Chest X-ray (thorax)

(The findings must be normal, a statement is required)
Chest X-ray of those who are going to nurse in the pulmonary diseases clinic, in maternity wards, delivery wards and in neonatal wards or who are going to work in day nurseries.
If a person in question has had a cough for over 3 weeks, an  expectoration sample  (a dye and a cultivation) is required.

3 - Vaccination certificates for valid immunizations

-TETANUS, vaccination is valid for 10 years

-POLIO, (injection), vaccination is valid for 10 years

-RUBELLA antibodies; if negative then MPR vaccination  (Measles/Morbilli, Pertussis, Rubella) or positive rubella antibodies

- In case the person has not had chicken pox /varicella, antibodies should be tested. If the VZV antibodies test gives less than 10, a vaccination is required.
4 - MRSA colonization sample from the nose and skin lesions (10883)
(MRSA = Meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus)

5  -  VRE colonisation sample of stools (10883)
(VRE = Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus fecalis/Faecium) and sample from the skin lesions.

Turku Polytechnic does not accept  into clinical practice in public health service persons who are MRSA positive.

A person who has been MRSA positive must have extensive MRSA laboratory tests done in Finland and he/she must have three (3) negative analysed results each one week between the tests. The person has liability to pay for the required test analyses.

6 - With regard to the SARS epidemic, day-to-day instructions of the Finnish National Public Health Institute will be followed.

7 - Jewellery and perforations

To prevent accidents through contagion of microbes and through entanglement of items,  one should not wear pieces of jewellery, trinkets and perforations in nursing: Rings, bracelets and different kinds of pins are not allowed to be worn in patient work. Because of infection risk,  it is not allowed to have perforations of the mucous membranes.  Regarding other perforations,  moderation is in order. This instruction is followed in all clinical practice.

8 - In the work to enhance the health and well-being of individuals, families and the entire population it is necessary to support the health of professionals in the field. In our educational unit we focus on healthy life styles and take a negative stance to smoking and the use of intoxicants and drugs. In supervised practice, the use of snuff is also forbidden. Our entire staff is committed to work for a healthy study and work environment. Use of intoxicants and drugs and all connected activities are absolutely forbidden, and measures will be taken if any are detected.

If some of vaccinations or tests are inadequate,  the student/teacher has liability to pay for the required vaccinations and tests.
