Module title:     Individually Negotiated Study

Level:          Three

Credits:     40 UK CATS (20 ECTS)

Rationale

This module will enable the student to select a topic to study in greater depth. It will enable the student to plan, research and produce evidence of individual study developed from a specialist aspect of radiography practice. In doing so the student will develop problem solving skills, through gaining experience in the formulation and application of action plans and strategies, and a degree of autonomy in learning. This module is also designed to prepare students for entry into the profession as a qualified practitioner and to encourage continuing professional development.

AIMS

To facilitate students in delivering a negotiated assignment based around their chosen specialist area.

To develop problem solving skills.

To encourage the students to assume greater responsibility for their own learning.

To provide the opportunity for students to communicate their knowledge of their chosen area in a suitable format to interested parties.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this module the student should be able to:

Plan and negotiate an assignment through the formulation and application of action plans and strategies.

Justify the appropriateness of the proposed assignment.

Locate, evaluate and reference relevant material.

Undertake an independent enquiry in a specialist area of radiography.

Synthesise, formulate and communicate complex knowledge to inform peers and professional colleagues.

Learning & Teaching strategy for Erasmus students

The learning and teaching strategies employed will be predominantly student centred. Emphasis will be on the student as an initiator of learning using their previous experience to question, evaluate and appraise their current experience. Student led seminars will be a key feature of this module. Erasmus students will also have the opportunity to attend small group tutorials in the clinical departments as well as lectures and seminars on the role of the `advanced practitioner' and topical themed study days. Students will meet together in small `learning communities' for tutorials which encourage discussion and debate using relevant published material.

Students will each be appointed a supervisor or facilitator for each learning community from the radiography lecturers. This lecturer will support the student in negotiating the learning contract and will also act as a resource, in terms of being able to direct students to appropriate sources.

CONTENT - FOR ERASMUS STUDENTS

WEEK 1     Induction & negotiation of  detailed learning contract.

WEEKS 2-8     Clinical placement - some general and some specialist areas by negotiation. One hour tutorial per week.

Delivery of presentation on Radiography in the student's home country.

WEEKS 9 - 11     Academic block - Lectures, seminars & tutorials on the advanced practitioner, to include:-

Reporting on appendicular skeleton (orthopaedics & trauma)

Intravenous cannulation

Barium enema administration and interpretation

Learning community discussion groups

WEEK 12

     Assessment & evaluation

Submission of seminar paper/discussion materials.

Half hour seminar presentation to learning community.

Possibly repeat delivery of presentation on Radiography in the student's home country.

Evaluation of Erasmus programme.
