Application for study at BUC should be done electronically.

The deadline for application for the spring term is 1st October. (This can be flexible for late applicants)

Travel:     International Airport - Bergen/Flesland, direct from Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stanstead, or via Oslo
     Railway - Bergen via Oslo
Seaport - Bergen - from Denmark and Newcastle

N.B. - If you travel by boat please be sensible and take "travelsickness" tablets before you get anywhere near the docks, and repeat the dosage at the prescribed intervals whilst en route. The North Sea can be very unkind - even to the most seasoned travellers - in the winter!

Please make your travel booking in good time ahead of your departure. Bergen is a middle-sized airport with only a limited number of international flights each day and flights are often over-booked especially around the holiday periods.

Student accommodation 1.  "Internat": The most used

Bedsit, with communal kitchen, showers, laundry/ironing facilities. Pay-phone on each corridor (available for in-coming calls too) - tel.: will depend on your room number.
Several of our own students, who will be taking part in the exchange, live in the Internat and may wish to let you "rent" their rooms. Internett connection. You can by a SIM card for your mobile phone.

Address:     Haukelandsbakken studenthjem
          Haukelandsbakken 45
          N-5009 BERGEN

Cost:          Bedsit -  approx. NoK 2100.-/month payable monthly (in advance). In practice it's cheaper for you to pay all 3 months in advance and save a large sum in giro/bank charges.
The Internat adjoins the college - 2 minutes from your room to the classroom. Two of the placement hospitals that we use are within walking distance, and there will be a short bus ride to two others. You'll be able to buy a bus card (absolute minimum fare).

Student accommodation 2. Norwegian exchange students' domicile/UiB bedsit:

Only a limited number of extra bedsits are available in the Internat for exchange students. Several of our own out-going students live there and will make their own accommodation available for in-coming students. Other exchange students live in the city itself and hope that in-coming students will want to take over their flats etc. during the exchange period. Costs will vary somewhat from the Internat, but may be slightly more luxurious, and this may mean that you would be sharing the accommodation with other students.

Student accommodation 3. UiB bedsit:

UiB (University) accommodation may have to be used. Close to the college and hospitals. This is a good alternative with facilities, e.g. sauna, which the Internat doesn't have. Costs about Kr. 1600/month. They also require a deposit of Kr. 3000.- refundable when you leave.

The first alternative (1.) will be the normal form for accommodation.

Emergencies:
The switchboard in the College is open until 15.30 (14.30 GMT) each day. The staff speak English. Relatives can use Julia's (answering machine), or your mentor's, home numbers in an emergency, and until you are able to notify them of your own number.

Kitchen utensils and cutlery, and bed linen will be loaned to you from the college. There will be a deposit charge of Kr. 300,-.

Equipment to bring with you:
Towels are not provided.
Winter boots with good rubber soles, preferably waterproof - suitable for snow, ice and rain. Warm woollen or thermal socks. Warm, wind and rain proof jacket, gloves and possibly a cap/headgear.
Hair dryer, walkman, alarm clock, etc.
Passport photos for bus cards, etc. (2 - 3)
Your personal hospital name/ID badge.
Film marker - L/R

Meals :
are available at a slightly reduced price in the hospital canteens, a main course may cost about
NoK 40,-.  Most students cook for themselves in the evenings.

Medical examination:
Norwegian hospital practice now requires a simple medical examination before going out into practical placements. This takes very little time and includes a nasal swab for MRSA, a skin test for Tb and possibly a chest X-ray. If you have had a chest X-ray shortly before coming to us, please put it in the bottom of your suitcase. If you have had a BCG vaccination and/or skin tests for Tb, please bring documentation with you. NB. This is not required of students coming from the Scandinavian countries or the Netherlands.

Teaching hours:
Generally from 8.15 until 14.15 each day. A lesson lasts for 45 min. with a 15 min. break between. Lunch break is from 12.00 - 12.30.

Practical placements:
The working day starts in most departments at 7.30, and finishes at 14.30. Lunch break is 30 mins. usually taken between 11.00 and 12.00. A full day for students in practice is 6 hours, excluding your lunch break. As the number of students taking part in the exchange programme increases we shall have to use placement hospitals outside Bergen.

Radiography practice in Bergen          -     Haukeland Sykehus (University Hospital)
                         -     Childrens` Clinic part of Haukeland Sykehus
                         -     Bergen Legevakt
                         -     2 other smaller hospitals in Bergen

Outside Bergen          -     Fylkessykehuset in Voss
               -     Sentralsykehuset in Stavanger
               -     Sentralsjukehuset i Sogn og Fjordane
               -     Other hospitals in Arendal, Kristiansand, on Stord, and other places

Therapy practice           -     Radiotherapy department, Haukeland Sykehus
If you are in a placement outside Bergen you will be required to pay for accommodation in that town, and your travelling expenses. These costs  will be refunded to you on your return to Bergen.

Please notify Julia by Email of your requirements or wishes with regard to practical placements before November 29th 2007.   If I hear nothing you will be put in to placements that happen to be vacant.
