Travel information
Your personal student tutor will meet upon your arrival (Turku airport or Turku bus station) and take you to your flat.
There are two local public transportation companies in Turku, TKL, which has yellow buses and TLO, which has blue buses. Local buses use modern smart cards and optical readers for payment. You can load money or time on the smart card at the Local Traffic Service Bureau or on the buses. You can also pay your fare( 2 euros) directly to the driver in cash.
You will get the student card from the Student Counselling Office. With this Turku Polytechnic Student Card you are able to obtain the National Student Rail Card and also the National Student Bus card. With them you will get 50% off from the train tickets and 50% discount off long-distance journeys.
Distances
Distance to Turku from airport is approximately 10 km. Turku Polytechnic, Health Care is situated 4 km from Turku Centre and Aura River. The Student Villages ( www.tys.fi) and hospitals ( www.tyks.fi) are in Turku town.
Student accommodation
You must book your own accommodation at least 6 weeks before your arrival. This way we can guarantee you a flat. Accommodation can be booked at the Student Village foundation of Turku (Turun Ylioppilaskyläsäätiö). Please fill the application form and sent it to TYS (info@tys.fi). The" info@tys.fi). The security deposit for studio is 250€, which is returned to the tenant when he/she has returned the keys of the apartment, left the apartment in good condition and paid his/her rent and other payments.
There are basic items of furniture in the Student Village flats. You can also borrow basic things for your flat from Turku Polytechnic International Office against a 50 EUR security deposit. The Starting Package Store is located at Sepänkatu 3. Your student tutor might have taken your Starting Package to your flat before your arrival.
Meals
State subsidised low-price student meal (approximately 2-3 EUR) is served in student canteens open all students. In order to get the student lunch you must show your student card. When you are in clinical placements you can get the meal at the restaurant in the hospital. Prices are reasonable.
Writing home, receiving post
In Turku Polytechnic you will receive your own e-mail address and you have the possibility to send and receive e-mails.
Health and other insurance
Before departing for Finland you should check up on your insurance. It is important to have an Accident and Health Insurance covering your stay. The international coordinator of your school will give you advice in insurances.
Student health care services by Turku Polytechnic include first aid treatment, medical consultations and physical examinations and this is free for the students.

Clinical placements
The imaging units where the clinical placements will take place are situated mainly in Medical Imaging Centre of Turku University Central Hospital in Turku town ( www.tyks.fi) Working time will be between 8.00 - 15.00 hrs during your clinical placement. You don´t need to bring your own uniforms, but we hope that you have the suitable shoes for your clinical placements. You have to bring your own radiation monitor which you take back with you after the exchange programme.

City and country information
Weather and clothes
The first snow usually falls in late November - early December. Even though in Turku area the winter is something more rainy than really cold, it is advisable to bring warm clothes and shoes especially if you are not accustomed to cold. You can get prepared to -5 to -15 degree Celsius but sometimes it can be as cold as - 25 degree Celsius. The many previous winters have been really cold (-20 to -25 degree C) and there have been a lot of snow as well.
