EHSAL's trumpcard: being a centre of Excellence in Education
EHSAL provides a wide range of academic and professional degree courses, which relate to the fields of study of Education, Health Care and Social Work or Economics and Management. The former offers training in Health Care, Social and Community Work Education and Teacher Training in general. The latter comprises the fields of study of Commercial Sciences, Commercial Engineering, Occupational & Environmental Management plus Secondary Education Teaching Group. EHSAL also gives graduates the opportunity to take teacher training courses, seminars and other advanced trainings, which are mainly organised by the Centre for Postgraduate Training (PT) and the Centre for Internationalisation and Projects (CIP) i.e. the international office.
EHSAL stands for high-level, quality, hands-on, professionally-oriented education and academic training in Brussels, the political and economic heart of the European Union.
Your host country, Belgium
Four successive reforms of the status of the Belgian state (1970, 1980, 1988-89, and 1993) have been necessary to establish the current status of the Kingdom of Belgium.
Belgium is a Federal State and is composed of three Communities and three regions. The Communities are constituted by the people, the language they use and cultural background they share. Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French and German and is thus subdivided in the Flemish community, the French Community and the German-speaking community.
The concept of Region is based on the historical aspiration to more economical autonomy. There are three Regions, the Flemish Region (Flanders), the Region of Brussels-Capital, and the Walloon Region (Wallonia), which might be compared to the American States and the German Länder.
The country is also subdivided into 10 Provinces and 589 Municipalities.
The City of Brussels
Brussels is:
Capital of Belgium, the so-called Brussels-capital region - consisting of Brussels' centre and the 19 communes
Capital of Flanders (northern part of Belgium) - www.flanders.be
Capital of Europe - European Commission, European Parliament
Home of Nato, Benelux Economic Union, Eurocontrol
Home of 70 000 students
Students from all over the world have been studying in the Belgian capital. You are now one of them. Today, the universities and university colleges in Brussels accommodate about 70.000 students. Brussels is a very lively city, which offers many activities to residing students. Thanks to its cinemas, theatres, museums and art galleries, as well as sports accommodation and nightlife, Brussels is never likely to be tiresome, on the contrary.
Temporary exhibitions, as of the Belgian artists Magritte, Delvaux (surrealism) and Khnopff (symbolism) for instance, complement the permanent exhibitions perfectly. A visit to the cartoon museum or a mini-comic strip tour through Brussels passing the wardrobe of Manneken Pis are only a few aspects of what Brussels has to offer.

Arriving in Brussels
How to get to Brussels?
Brussels Airport is located in Zaventem. The easiest, quickest and cheapest way to get to the centre of Brussels is by train: the trainstation is at the airport.
By train
All major train lines cross Brussels. There are three stations in Brussels: Brussels North (Noord/Nord), Brussels Central (Centraal/Central), Brussels South (Zuid/Midi). Get off at the right station!
The international trains (Eurostar/Thalys) arrive at (depart from) Brussels South.
To Campus Nieuwland (Nieuwland 198, 1000 Brussels)
This campus is located in the centre of Brussels as well, at about 5 minutes walking from the South Station (Brussel Zuid/Bruxelles Midi).
Traveling by train, you leave the train in the South station, leave the station taking exit Fonsnylaan, take left, cross the broad avenue and walk into the street called Nieuwland.
If you take the subway (metro), then you stop at Lemonnier (line 3) or Zuid/Midi (line 2).
If you take the bus, you best leave the bus at the South station.
At Campus Nieuwland you will find the information desk on your left. The host or hostess will track down a staff member of the Centre for External Co-operation for you.
